Hostel-Casa del Pellegrino PIETRALBA in Nova Ponente (Bolzano)
At the Sanctuary of Pietralba: place of peace and prayer, habitual stay of Albino Luciani and destination of pilgrimages from all over Europe.
The Sanctuary originated in 1553 when the Virgin Mary appeared to Leonhard Weißensteiner to heal him from his illness. She asked him to build, as a thank you, a chapel where the faithful could go to invoke and praise her.
The original chapel immediately became the destination of many pilgrims and it was soon necessary to build a church. The current baroque basilica was completed in 1654.
Since Pope John Paul II arrived in Pietralba on July 17, 1988, the influx of visitors has greatly increased.
Following a forest path, for about 20 minutes to the east, you can climb to the Leonhard hermitage, a charming place where the virgin appeared at the Weißensteiner and from where you can enjoy the view towards some peaks of the Dolomites: the Catinaccio, the Marmolada and the Latemar.
The pilgrimage site with the church, the pilgrims' hostel (built in 1897), the shop and a large parking lot is ideal not only for pilgrims but also for many hikers. Pietralba is an ideal starting point for mountain hikes.
