DON TONINO BELLO house of conviviality in Alessano (Lecce)
31 posti letto

Description
Casa della Convivialità is located in the former convent of the Conventual Franciscan friars, dedicated to Saint Anthony. The convent has been renovated and transformed into a guesthouse. Today, it displays all its beauty combined with the comforts needed to welcome pilgrims and visitors.
The origins of the complex's first nucleus date back to 1220, with a small chapel and a few cells on the ground floor. It expanded over time, reaching its current layout in 1770. With the abolition of religious orders, it was expropriated (like many other convents) and confiscated by the state. In 1869, it was purchased by private individuals and used as a manufacturing center (tobacco factory, olive oil mill, and food preserves).
A long period of total disuse followed before it gradually returned to church ownership, through donations from the Torsello family and subsequent direct purchases by the Parish.
The restoration and renovation work began in 2010 with donations and community resources and was completed with the intervention of the Italian Episcopal Conference (CEI). This work was facilitated by the building's vocation for prayer and meditation and its location in the birthplace and burial place of Don Tonino Bello. (He was declared "Venerable" by decree of His Holiness Pope Francis on November 25, 2021).
