Description
The Sassi Turchini project was born within the Elba Group, founded by Don Andrea Faberi in 1977 with the aim of organizing community life experiences among young people and disabled people. Sassi Turchini Vacanze Accessibili becomes a place of experimentation and hospitality in which to host people with disabilities or with other forms of social disadvantage in a context of great naturalistic and tourist value.
Sassi Turchini is composed of:
Sleeping area : 8 dormitories of 32m2, two of which with the possibility of a private bathroom; Shared bathrooms for men and women consisting of 8 showers, 4 toilets and sinks; 6 external showers.
Living area : 45m2 kitchen with professional burners, professional electric oven, fryer, pasta cooker, frytop, cold room, refrigerated cabinet, chest freezer; 70m2 refectory/multipurpose room with tables and chairs for approximately 100 people (the refectory is heated by a thermo-fireplace); 80m2 covered external refectory
External area : Large central garden of 300 m2 equipped with benches and shaded areas with tensile structures; large pine forest on the south side, Mediterranean scrub on the west side of the structure.
Sassi Turchini is designed as a place that allows its guests to develop new forms of interaction. Over the years, interaction between guests has proven to be an added value for the holidays of all the associations and people who have known the structure.
The choices made in Sassi Turchini, thanks also to the precious collaboration of the Municipalities of Porto Azzurro, Bagno a Ripoli and the Tuscany Region, have consistently pursued the principle of full accessibility, which should not be understood only as the removal of architectural barriers. Sassi Turchini is committed to also removing the barriers of prejudice and indifference such as those of traditional and mass tourism.
Sassi Turchini is located 200 m. from the bus stop. It is located just outside the town of Porto Azzurro, two supermarkets are located about a km away as well as the pharmacy a kilometer and a half from the structure, the center of Porto Azzurro offers all the commercial and leisure activities of a very characteristic town with a great tourist vocation.
Surroundings:
Less than a kilometer away is the Reale beach equipped with a platform for better access to the sea, a kilometer and a half away is the Barbarossa beach. Both beaches are equipped with umbrellas and have several bars and restaurants.
Halfway between Sassi Turchini and Porto Azzurro is the delightful Sanctuary of the Madonna del Monserrato, which hosts an evocative historical reenactment in September. The villages of Capoliveri and Rio Elba, sites of historical and tourist interest, are less than half an hour away by car.
In the surrounding area there are many CAI trails with different levels of difficulty. Sassi Turchini is also an ideal destination for those who decide to tackle the GTE (Grande Traversata Elbana) that from Rio Marina leads to the western coast of the island ending on the slopes of Monte Capanne.
