Center of spirituality and culture SEMINAR OF MAROLA in Carpineti (Reggio Emilia)
Description
The Centre, 800 metres above sea level in the heart of the Reggio Emilia Apennines, is located on the site of the ancient hermitage of Giovanni da Marola in the 11th century. The abbey church was built in the last decade of the 11th century by order of Countess Matilde di Canossa on the road called “via matildica”. In the same period, a hermitage was built on the southern side of the church, which became a Benedictine monastery a few years later. Over the centuries it underwent alternating events, from periods of great splendor to a gradual decline; in 1824 it became the seat of the Episcopal Seminary and remained so until 1972. Since then, a new phase began with the creation of the Diocesan Spirituality Centre.
