The Center, 800 meters above sea level in the heart of the Reggio Emilia Apennines, is located on the site of the ancient hermitage of Giovanni da Marola in the 11th century. The abbey church was built in the last decade of the 11th century at the behest of Countess Matilda of Canossa on the road known as the "Matildic Way." Around the same time, a hermitage was erected on the south side of the church, which a few years later became a Benedictine monastery. Over the centuries, it underwent alternating fortunes, from periods of great splendor to gradual decline; in 1824, it became the seat of the Episcopal Seminary, a position it remained until 1972. A new era began then with the creation of the Diocesan Spirituality Center.
