Religious house VILLA CRAWFORD in Sant'Agnello (Naples)
70 posti letto

Description
On the coast overlooking the sea, perched on enormous bastions rising from the water, you can admire the stunning villa once owned by American writer Francis Marion Crawford, who chose to live in Sant'Agnello in 1885. When the writer purchased the villa, it was a simple farmhouse surrounded by a vast garden. In the villa's tranquility, the writer composed many of the works that made him world-famous, and over time, he made modifications to the original building, making it as beautiful as it is today, with forms vaguely reminiscent of ancient medieval castles. Added to this is its stunning location, overlooking the sea, with a delightful view of the Gulf of Naples: the imposing Vesuvius and the islands of Ischia, Procida, and Capri.
The villa passed to her eldest daughter, Eleonora, wife of the nobleman Pietro Rocca di Roccapadula, to whom she bore two sons: Leone and Onorio. The former became a lawyer and, in later life, a Jesuit; the latter became a talented musician and composer, and, upon his father's death, became a priest and spiritual guide to the many young people who frequented his home, Villa Crawford. He had donated it, in 1954, to the Institute of Mary Help of Christians, which still welcomes the many young people who gather there to spend a few hours of leisure and prayer. The villa's interior was enriched with artistically carved wood panels, the work of the Sorrento craftsman Giovanni Massa.
The garden also underwent a transformation: it was embellished with sculptures by the writer's father, Thomas, and with ancient artifacts, of which Crawford was an avid collector. He also commissioned a tennis court, nestled amidst the lush citrus trees that adorned the surrounding garden. A keen sailor, Crawford frequently traveled aboard his sailing ship, which he was authorized to command. He also built a pathway to the sea, providing access to the small harbor where his vessels could dock. This villa played an important role in the history of Sant'Agnello, as a focal point and meeting place for the cultural scene of the time. This building is an important heritage for all, a glimpse into the 19th century, where the original atmosphere is still palpable, despite the passage of time.
The religious house boasts a tradition of hospitality and serenity. The climate contributes to making it a privileged place for spiritual recharging, rest, and relaxation, offering the opportunity to experience silence and contact with nature, extended periods of prayer, and encounter with the "Word" in the spirit of Salesian spirituality.
