Description

In a splendid position on the lake just outside Rome, Villa Palazzola is a Cistercian monastery from the 13th century, completely renovated and modernized with a large swimming pool and a terrace with a breathtaking garden. It is the perfect place for parish groups, pilgrims, school groups, families, couples or people on vacation alone.

It was built on the site of a prestigious summer estate of a Roman consul. It is perched above the extinct volcanic lake of Albano, south of Rome. For centuries Palazzola was home to Carthusian, Cistercian and Franciscan monks and friars, whose memory is preserved in the splendid 13th century church of Nostra Signora delle Nevi which is located next to the medieval convent and its classic Italian garden.
In 1920, Palazzola was purchased by Venerable English College as a refuge from the sultry heat of Roman summers. In recent times, the College has developed this site to create facilities for hospitality, recreation and conferences; and is happy to be able to open its doors to share with you the beauty and charm of the Villa.

A few minutes from Ciampino airport, with its low-cost flights you can come for a few days of retreat, pilgrimage or relaxation. You can organize conferences, weddings and other special functions here. With a car you can explore the fascinating cities and Roman ruins of the Castelli Romani hills, the beaches on the lake, the family-run trattorias, the cellars and the nearby seaside towns of Ostia, Nettuno, Anzio. The opportunities in and around Palazzola are endless!

The Villa is located among 16 acres of protected woodland, sports fields and nature trails. From the terraced sides of the garden, you can enjoy a breathtaking view of Lake Albano up to the Pope's summer residence in Castel Gandolfo, up to Rome itself and towards the Mediterranean Sea. The writer Henry James described it as "the best panorama in Italy!"
